Mid-Month Musings: September 2019

Ah fall.

Where pumpkin spice (ew) is in the air and so are the mosquitos, because those little bastards refuse to die.

Spoiler: I am 90% mosquito bite right now, and probably have West Nile, Zika and whatever else those things give you. It’s only a matter of time.

Yet again, I’ve read a disappointing number of books, which means that later-September me is going to have to step it up if I’m going to make my super secret reading goal.

Small celebration: I reached my normal super secret reading goal of 150 this month.

Part of that slowness is finding a routine, still moving from the old house to the new, and Hurricane Dorian. We were thankfully spared any damage with the last wobble before it crashed into Ocracoke, but I worked before and immediately after the storm and had an overnight shift that took me a while to recover from (I am not a night owl).

But this month is Sci Fi September, which had a very ambitious TBR that I have totally not even made a dent in.

Here are the four books I’ve read so far this month:

I’ve loved pretty much everything so far (minus Undercity), but was hoping to read more. Maybe my reading speed will pick up, but I’ve been having a hard time focusing or wanting to read anything. I don’t think it’s a slump just yet?

I’m currently reading:

Both are fairly good so far, but I’m having trouble getting deeper into Blackfish City, mostly because the narrative style feels a little pretentious. Good Omens is an audiobook, and I know that I would never have been able to finish it if I was reading a physical copy. Next up are two (hopefully) quick ARCs: Sisters of the Vast Black (more nuns in space!) and Ormeshadow.

Audiobook TBR

I own Downbelow Station (and have owned a copy for over fifteen years), and Empire of Sand returns from the library in 15 days. I’m listening to Good Omens at 1.25 and might go up to 1.5, because I’ve wanted to read Empire of Sand ever since I received an ARC and um, never got around to it.

Book TBR

All of these. Some are ARCs, and some are books I’ve owned for a bit or new releases I’m excited about.

So hopefully I can get reading a bit this weekend. And hopefully the anxiety of all of the other September releases (and coming due library books) that fall outside my theme don’t paralyze me into a readingless stupor.

Wish me luck!

What books have you loved reading this month?

Have you ever done a themed reading month?
