Top 10 Tuesday: TBR Books I’ve Been Avoiding

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.

Oh this is a loaded topic. There are so many books on my TBR I’ve been artfully dodging (some for years). Hopefully I get to some of them this year, although so far my plan to read all SFF books this month has been torpedoed since I’ve only finished two books so far and am woefully behind.

The Stone Sky by NK Jemisin

How many times have I mentioned this book in the past five months? I need to get to it because I’m dying to know how it all ends, but I’m also scared because this is going to be a heavy read and I’m just not sure if I’m ready or not.

The Fiery Cross by Diana Gabaldon

Two things have prevented me from wading into book 5 of the Outlander series: the sheer size of this behemoth and that many folks said it was their least favorite in the series. Also: it’s apparently a lot of Brianna. But the fifth season premiers in February 2020 so I need to get my ass in gear (and also watch season 4).

The Tethered Mage by Melissa Caruso

Girls swordfighting in ballgowns and wielding magic. This should be a slam dunk love fest, so why the hell haven’t I read it yet? Also: I received an eARC waaaaaaay back in 2017 that I um, didn’t read, and I also bought a physical copy. No excuses.

Jade City by Fonda Lee

I checked this book out so many times from the library that the library techs started giving me knowing “Are you actually going to read it this time?” smirks each time. So I bought a copy. Now it sits on my TBR pile, taunting me. I will read it. Soon. This year.

Archenemies by Marissa Meyer

I loved Renegades, but for some reason have yet to crack this open, despite purchasing it just after the release date. I’m thinking this is another case of Crooked Kingdom syndrome, where I hesitate on reading a sequel because I’m worried it won’t live up to the hype—both of the first book and of the reviews.

The Long-Time Lurkers

These have all been on my TBR since the beginning of my Goodreads account in 2012. Actually, these are the only books from 2012 still on my TBR, and are the ones that have survived several TBR purges (and I did finally read some of the books from that time!), which shows my determination that one day I will make an effort to read them. One day. Just not perhaps this year.

What books have you been avoiding?
